The Senior Great Dane Care Guide

1. Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)

DCM is the most significant and heartbreaking health risk for senior Great Danes. The heart muscle progressively weakens and enlarges, reducing its ability to pump blood effectively. Great Danes develop DCM at high rates, and the disease often progresses silently before obvious symptoms appear — sometimes presenting first as sudden collapse or cardiac death without prior warning.

Annual cardiac screening with echocardiography and 24-hour Holter monitoring should begin at age 3 to 4. When detected early, medication can significantly slow progression and extend quality of life. Never skip the cardiac exam for a senior Dane.

2. Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus)

The Great Dane is one of the highest-risk breeds for bloat in the world. Their enormous, deep chest, combined with their tendency to eat quickly and their large meal sizes, creates the perfect conditions for GDV. It is a rapidly fatal emergency — the stomach fills with gas and rotates, cutting off blood supply. Without surgery within hours, it is almost always fatal.

Prophylactic gastropexy — surgically tacking the stomach — is strongly recommended for all Great Danes and is often performed at the time of spay or neuter. If your Dane has not had gastropexy, discuss it with your vet now. Also feed two to three small meals daily, avoid exercise for 90 minutes after eating, and use a slow-feeder bowl.

3. Hip Dysplasia & Joint Disease

Great Danes carry significant weight on their tall frames and are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and the progressive joint disease that follows. Senior Danes often show a distinctive stiff, careful gait, reluctance to rise from rest, and difficulty with stairs. Their long legs make falls especially dangerous and potentially catastrophic at their size.

4. Osteosarcoma

Great Danes are among the giant breeds at significantly elevated risk for osteosarcoma (bone cancer), which most commonly affects the long bones of the forelimbs. Sudden, progressive, severe lameness in a limb — particularly a foreleg — without clear injury is a red flag warranting immediate X-rays. Osteosarcoma is aggressive; early detection is crucial for the most treatment options.

5. Wobbler Syndrome

Wobbler Syndrome (cervical spondylomyelopathy) is more common in large and giant breeds including Great Danes. Compression of the spinal cord in the neck region causes a progressive, characteristic wobbling gait — especially in the rear limbs — along with neck pain, weakness, and coordination loss. Watch for scuffing of hind paws, swaying when walking, and reluctance to lower the head to eat or drink.

Great Danes are emotionally attuned, gentle dogs who thrive on human connection. As physical activity declines in the senior years, their emotional needs don't diminish — they often intensify. Separation anxiety, cognitive changes, and depression can all emerge when a senior Dane feels isolated or unstimulated. Structured routines, gentle engagement, and consistent presence are the best medicine.
